Cut height matters more than cut frequency

Scalping is the most common damage a mowing service does. St. Augustine wants to be kept tall, around three and a half to four inches; Bermuda is cut far shorter. Never remove more than a third of the blade in one pass, whatever the grass.

Know your grass before you buy a program

St. Augustine, Bahia, Zoysia and Bermuda want different water, different heights and different fertilizer. Treating them identically is exactly how a lawn thins out and fills with weeds over a season.

Year-round mowing in Florida

Growth here is continuous rather than seasonal, so service runs weekly through the hot wet months and stretches to biweekly when it slows — it does not stop. A crew that disappears for the winter is working from a northern calendar.

Pre-emergent has to go down before you see weeds

Timing is the whole game: it must be applied before soil temperatures trigger germination, not after weeds appear. Many areas also restrict nitrogen during the rainy season to protect waterways, and a crew that follows those rules is the crew that knows the local agronomy.
